When did the papers merge into The State Journal-Register?[edit]
The newspaper's website used to have an about tab which stated that the Illinois State Journal and Illinois State Register merged in 1974. In researching for another article however, I found a news clipping (mirror link) from 1965 which identifies the newspaper as The State Journal-Register, nine years before the merger was supposed to have taken place.
Unfortunately this publication is not accessible on Newspapers.com but is instead on NewsBank, which at present is not available via the Wikipedia Library. It is hard to find information confirming anything regarding when these newspapers merged and the name change occured. Any help? Tkbrett (✉) 13:11, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The first official instance of the Illinois State Journal and Register was published on May 17, 1942. This was the first iteration of a combined newspaper in Springfield, Illinois. This combined newspaper was issued only on Sundays. This can be seen in the editorial on page four of that paper dated May 17, 1942. The two newspapers, the Illinois State Journal and the Illinois State Register, would continue to be published separately daily with one being the morning paper and the other the evening paper although both were published by the Copley Press in the same building. This would continue until July 1, 1974 when both papers would cease the morning and evening runs individually and would be combined to into The State Journal-Register which was only published in the morning. All of these instances can be found in the editorial sections of the newspapers with the aforementioned dates. — Mr Xaero☎️ 02:06, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
