This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because... It is as important as list of cultivars of other popular plants, fruits and vegetables eg List of basil cultivars, List of banana cultivars, List of mango cultivars and others in Lists of cultivars. Obviously it needs a lot more work, but this is just a start, it is just a copy of the work already done by others in assembling the list. The list is not obvious as not all cultivars of onions are actually the same plant at all. -Tony Wills (talk) 08:47, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A list of onion cultivars would be worthwhile, but this is not a list of onion cultivars, in spite of the title. It is a list of "onion" (Allium) species, and most of the listed species aren't cultivated. There's some very nice work here however; the table that includes common names and photos is useful, but maybe should be merged into List of Allium species? Good content here, but it doesn't belong at this title. Plantdrew (talk) 03:28, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I quite agree, basically my fault :-). But hold off for a bit as there is a bit of a discussion going on over at onion, possibly going to be spit/re-organised, then we'll see what further pages are needed. --Tony Wills (talk) 08:00, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing me to the onion discussion. I'll see what consensus develops. Plantdrew (talk) 06:56, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Many of the onions in this list are species in nature. They are not cultivated, propagated, or artificially selected. This list should only contain cultivars. Thanx. Ruff tuff cream puff (talk) 00:23, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, it's just a list of species.
"Onion cultivars" would be varieties of allium cepa. Kentynet (talk) 12:22, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
