Pending changes reviewer granted

Hello. Your account has been granted the "pending changes reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on pages protected by pending changes. The list of articles awaiting review is located at Special:PendingChanges, while the list of articles that have pending changes protection turned on is located at Special:StablePages.

Being granted reviewer rights neither grants you status nor changes how you can edit articles. If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello AmirahBreen,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Your account has been blocked indefinitely for advertising or promotion and violating the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use. This is because you have been making promotional edits to topics in which you have a financial stake, yet you have failed to adhere to the mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a form of conflict of interest (COI) editing which involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is strictly prohibited. Using this site for advertising or promotion is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia.

If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, please read our guide to appealing blocks to understand more about unblock requests, and then add the text {{unblock|reason=your reason here ~~~~}} at the end of your user talk page. For that request to be considered, you must:

  • Confirm that you have read and understand the Terms of Use and paid editing disclosure requirements.
  • State clearly how you are being compensated for your edits, and describe any affiliation or conflict of interest you might have with the subjects you have written about.
  • Describe how you intend to edit such topics in the future.

And before you go about denying this: I am looking at your UpWork. I see accepted jobs for articles that you have created. Because this block involves offwiki evidence, I have marked it as appealable only to the Arbitration Committee (you may contact arbcom-en@wikimedia.org to appeal), but again: I am looking at your UpWork account right now, so you're going to need one heck of a good explanation if you're going to be unblocked. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GeneralNotability (talkcontribs) 17:45, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Refuweegee moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Refuweegee, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. The Arbitration Committee has resolved to remove the part of your block that is designated as a CU block. This means that you will need to further appeal to the community for the socking and undisclosed paid editing with an appeal on your talk page, where an administrator will be able to review it and potentially take further action. Request reason:

The Arbitration Committe has advised me to appeal to the community for the socking and undisclosed paid editing with an appeal on my talk page, where an administrator will be able to review it and potentially take further action.
1. The issue my account AmirahBreen I was initially blocked for was paid editing. I have listed all the paid editing below.
After being blocked for paid editing I found that much of my unpaid work (the vast majority of work I had done on Wikipedia was unpaid) was being deleted. I found this upsetting and attempted to edit using an old account JFBreen. The old account was blocked as a sockpuppet. Although I had never intended to engage in sock puppetry from the start, I set up AmirahBreen before I was ever aware of the rules on sock puppetry, and both accounts were own name.
After both these accounts were blocked I began to set up sock puppet accounts. All of which were blocked almost immediately. The reason the last sockpuppet account I attempted to use was identified was due to the fact I have always used the same Amazon Fire computer (as it says on the Sockpuppet Investigation same user agents were used). I did not consider it worth the purchase of a new computer to defend work I had never been paid for anyway and even the small amount of paid work I had done was hardly enough to pay for a new laptop, so at this point I did not persist further in attempting to create sockpuppet accounts. Although the edits I made through the sockpuppet accounts were good faith in principal I realise now that it was disruptive to be creating accounts to edit while my main account was blocked and have long since stopped doing this.
2. If I am unblocked any future edits I make will be useful contributions to the encyclopedia following the Wikipedia rules and guidelines to the best of my knowledge. I do not intend to edit on any subjects I was previously paid to edit. I am still interested in editing on subjects I was never paid to edit where there is no conflict of interest.
3. If unblocked I will edit only from my main account, I will not create sockpuppet accounts. I am not at this point in time intending to do paid editing again, but if I do so in the future I will follow Wikipedia guidelines and rules in declaring it and in any work I do.

Decline reason:

Closing as stale, you may make a new request. 331dot (talk) 09:06, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

I'm pretty impressed with this request. GeneralNotability, what are your thoughts? SQLQuery Me! 22:55, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
SQL, since I was involved in the arbcom side of this, I think it's better if I don't opine. You are free to act on this as you think appropriate. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:07, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, thanks for getting back to me. I'll wait for more opinions. SQLQuery Me! 00:51, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question. Regarding the Talk:Sharif_Sheikh_Ahmed/Archive_1#WP:COI? discussion, is it still your position that you had no WP:COI on that article? I'm not asking about WP:PAID here. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:26, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There's also the issues brought up here: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1065#WP:NPOV, WP:OWN, and copyright violations at Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 11:59, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this is still my position, and this issue has also no connection with the reasons I have been given for being blocked, which are paid editing and sock puppetry. This is why I did not mention them in my appeal. Amirah talk 12:12, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:18, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ScottishFinnishRadish, this was a content dispute and in no way was it connected to the issues of paid editing or sock puppetry Amirah talk 23:28, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If unblocked, what kind of edits (if any) would you make, to what kind of articles/topics?Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 06:27, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If unblocked I will not repeat the behaviour I was blocked for in any future editing, neither do I intend to edit any articles which I was previously paid to edit. I will make constructive edits following Wikipedia guidelines to the best of my ability, these may be on any article/topic where there is no COI. Amirah talk 23:41, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am concerned that if this user is unblocked without addressing the behaviour at the Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed article, this user may repeat behaviour that is inappropriate that may lead to another block. AmirahBreen, what could you have done differently in that article and during the discussions in order to create a more collegial discussion or resolve disputes among editors? Z1720 (talk) 20:57, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comment @Z1720:, I do appreciate your concerns over this article, however I am following the guidance on Wikipedia:Guide to appealing blocks here, which warns me to keep my request to the point and address the reasons I was blocked as I have done above. As this article has no connection to the reasons I was blocked, I feel that addressing this here would be inappropriate and may make my appeal too wordy and complex for the admins who are kindly reviewing my block.
WP:NOTTHEM says that 'Disagreements with others should be addressed through dispute resolution after you are unblocked, but your unblock request is not the place for this'. Amirah talk 23:06, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is certainly part of the reason for a continuing block, as you edited the article with a sock to continue skewing the POV. [2] ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 00:24, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for drawing this to my attention.
The reason I was initially blocked was for paid editing, not sock puppetry. The paid editing was not connected in any way to the article concerned. The only reason for sock puppetry as listed under Wikipedia:ILLEGIT was block evasion. I started using socks as a reaction to being blocked, but decided not to continue using them as it is against Wikipedia guidelines. I have not used sock puppet accounts since the last investigation which was in Feb 2022. I have no intention of using sock puppet accounts in the future whether I am unblocked or not.
I accept that I used a sock to edit the article, but not that I used a sock in order to deliberately skew the POV. This is evidenced by the fact that I did not use sock puppet accounts until after I was blocked. If you wish to discuss my POV and intention you are welcome to do so following dispute resolution guidelines if I'm unblocked. Amirah talk 01:43, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The answers above are not sufficient for me to recommend an unblock. While the block was for undisclosed paid editing and socking, other behaviour needs to be addressed, acknowledged, and corrected before it can be lifted. Otherwise, this behaviour will lead to more disputes, time taken away from improving Wikipedia, and possibly another block for AmirahBreen. Furthermore, citing WP:GAB as to why they are not discussing this issue is dodging the question and feels like Wikilawyering. The purpose of GAB's recommendation for staying on task is to prevent unblock requests from being too long; considering that AmirahBreen was directly asked about the Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed article, I do not see how GAB (an essay, and not a guideline or policy) prevents them from answering the question. I hope AmirahBreen changes their mind and chooses to address their conduct in the article below. Talking about their "POV and intention" after they are unblocked is too late. Z1720 (talk) 02:20, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I understand what you are saying about GAB not being a guideline or policy, and will attempt to answer your concerns as succintly as possible. Other than the behaviour for which I was blocked, I have always done my best to edit Wikipedia to the best of my ability following guidelines and policy to the best of my knowledge. As far as the article is concerned I have been accused in previous discussions of negative POV and have always maintained that I considered my edits a fair reflection of reliable published sources and still do. Since I was blocked editors have had ample opportunity to edit the article without any input from me at all. As the article now stands there are only three edits which I would make if I were unblocked at this point in time. That is the internal link to Disappearance of Ikran Tahlil Farah which was broken when the article was renamed and the red link was removed. I would re-instate this link as I consider it a valid edit to the article. Whether this reflects positively or negatively on the subject of the bio, I would consider it a valid edit either way. I would also consider it relevant to add under the section Support for Ethiopia's military in Tigray, that Mohamed confirmed on 23rd May 2022 that 5,000 soldiers had been sent to Eritrea for training and that there had been delays in their return to Somalia due to election disputes. [3][4] General Tahlil was reported as saying in Jan 2023 that most of the 5,000 soldiers in Eritrea had been repatriated and that the rest would also be returning to Somalia soon. [5] and since the training program is also mentioned in the article about Ikran, I would think that it should also be mentioned there too. It is to Mohamed's credit that he conceded when presidential elections were eventually held in May 2022 and there was a peaceful transfer of power completed by 23rd May. There are many sources which could be quoted on this and I also think it deserves a mention, particularly in view of the friction and delays which preceded the election which are covered in some detail in the article.
As with many bios the article on Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed contains information which reflects positively/negatively on the subject as well as information which reflects neither positively nor negatively. Much of the information in this article which may reflect positively on the subject was added by myself. For example, the Awards and honours section and the link to his thesis in External links. I still maintain that my POV is neutral on the subject and my intentions are honestly to improve Wikipedia as an encyclopedia. In order to improve communications I would ask that other editors assume good faith and I am willing to do so myself. Amirah talk 03:28, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this response. It will take me some time to read this and give an opinion (real-life business is getting in the way) but I will try toread this soon. I also encourage others to read the response and give their thoughts below. Z1720 (talk) 16:49, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock Request

Request reason:

I am submitting a further unblock request as my last request was closed as stale. My reasons have not changed. I request that other editors do not question me further on matters not directly relating to the reason I was blocked, as this makes the thread too long and admins may not then have time to respond to it.

I'm very concerned that you plan to edit controversial political topics when you previously received three blocks for disruptive editing in such areas [6]. Considering your history of paid editing, sockpuppetry, and problematic editing in areas under WP:AE sanctions, I am simply not convinced that the benefits of unblocking your account will outweigh the negatives. You've said what you won't edit, but not what you will edit. 331dot (talk) 12:14, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Although I am not actively planning edits at the moment because I am blocked, from time to time I come across articles which I notice may benefit from edits. I gave three examples in my final answer in the previous appeal which was closed as stale. I will summarise these here.
1. I would re-instate the internal link to Disappearance of Ikran Tahlil Farah in the Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed article.
2. I would add under the section Support for Ethiopia's military in Tigray, that Mohamed confirmed on 23rd May 2022 that 5,000 soldiers had been sent to Eritrea for training and that there had been delays in their return to Somalia due to election disputes.[7][8] General Tahlil was reported as saying in Jan 2023 that most of the 5,000 soldiers in Eritrea had been repatriated and that the rest would also be returning to Somalia soon. [9] and since the training program is also mentioned in the article about Ikran, I would mention it there too.
3. I would add that Mohamed conceded when presidential elections were eventually held in May 2022 and there was a peaceful transfer of power completed by 23rd May, there are many sources which could be quoted on this.
