Flight date[edit]

This advert in Flight 23rd March 1951 gives first flight date as 12 March that year. as does this GraemeLeggett (talk) 14:58, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The recent "Fairey - Company Profile 1915-1960" also has the 12 March 1951. I have other sources that dont give the actual date but none that say the 10th. MilborneOne (talk) 15:30, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wings of Fame Volume 11 has 12 March 1951, as does Taylor's Fairey Aircraft since 1915. It looks like sources are in general agreement about the date.Nigel Ish (talk) 15:40, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Any more on the VTO angle[edit]

This 1954 article shows a VTO model undergoing rocket launches, and I think another source said that different configurations for the FD1 were tested in model on rockets before they finished the design. GraemeLeggett (talk) 18:28, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

E.10/47 covered the design and construction of a prototype, tailess, jet propelled Delta aircraft, to provide data on:

the aerodynamic characteristics of Delta wing aircraft and the use of jet thrust as a means of control.
the problems involved in vertical launching.

Perhaps after all the testing with models they decided they didnt need to do any more research on the vertical bit, I havent got the Putnam Fairey book but that might have more on the large number of models produced and the results. MilborneOne (talk) 18:43, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

First British Delta[edit]

I believe both the Avro 707 and the Boulton Paul P111 delta wing aircraft flew before the FD1, in 1949 and 1950 respectively. Bobins2 (talk) 11:04, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
