It's even better than that, theleekycauldron. I've looked through last year's DYK archive and it was the non-lead hook with the highest hourly views for 2021. That is an outstanding result! It beat other non-picture hooks with saucy page titles like Napoleon's penis or Best Sex I've Ever Had. Hi @[[User:DrThneed|DrThneed], Thank you for your hard work to write Wikipedia pages for Kiwi women in science. I noticed that you updated the Wikipedia page about me to include a reference to my PhD thesis. Thank you - that is really helpful. In the same edit, I notice that you added my deadname (Isuru) to the top of the text. This was pointed out to me by a colleague who did some work to help me with my personal info online. I frequently receive hate mail from those who take exception to my work on gender, race & LGBTQ+ inclusion and equity in science. Lately, I have received messages and threats of spreading my deadname amongst my work colleagues. I want to reach out to you to point out that I changed my name legally via NZ DIA to Izzy in 2018. So, including my deadname is no longer accurate. My Alma Mater, University of Auckland has refused to update their records on my qualifications unless I bring the evidence of my ID to them in person - something that I cannot easily do because I currently reside in the U.K. Can I please ask that you correct the record on Wikipedia to reflect my current legal name? Thank you for your understanding.

@IJ64sz I'm so sorry to have deadnamed you (and I'm sorry Auckland Uni are being difficult about it, so that this thesis citation is even an issue). I've just amended the thesis citation so that it doesn't display the deadname, at least. @Schwede66 will be able to do a more complete removal in the page history than I can, if you are able to find a mention somewhere that he can use to justify it. Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

      • Linked Data for Libraries LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group Working Hour November 20th, 2023: Over the summer and into the fall the LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group will be offering a series of Wikidata Working Hours to give folks an opportunity to try out various Wikidata-related skills and tools by assembling a data set of diverse library and information science (LIS) materials (articles, conference proceedings, books) and adding it to Wikidata. Wikidata Working Hours provide hands-on Wikidata experience in a supportive space. We hope you will join us if you are interested in learning more about Wikidata, exploring LIS literature, and have been looking for a fun Wikidata project to contribute to.     • We are taking steps towards making many more languages available in Lexemes and monolingual text statement values. (phab:T341409)
    • Nikki fixed a bug where the CSS class for a statement rank wasn't updated after a rank change (phab:T209138)
    • We are continuing the work on improving EntitySchemas by making it possible to link to them in statements.
    • We are migrating several tools from the Wikit design system to the Codex design system to be able to deprecate Wikit in the future.

    • Harvest Templates - is a tool that helps transfer data from Wikimedia projects to Wikidata.
    • User:MichaelSchoenitzer/Updown - is a userscript used for faster navigation. If there are a lot of values for one property it will add arrows that allow you to jump to the first/last value.

    • We are preparing for the Data Modelling Days happening later this week
    • Language codes:
    • EntitySchemas: We are experimenting with how to work around some technical blockers for the new datatype
    • Wikibase REST API: We've been working on the ability to remove an Item's label in a specific language and modify the descriptions on a Property (phab:T342981, phab:T342981)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

    • ZotWb < export records in a Zotero group library to a custom Wikibase, prepare datasets to send to OpenRefine, feed OpenRefine reconciliaton results back to the Wikibase. Wikidata is envolved in the entity reconciliation.

    • Mismatch Finder: We are continuing the work on moving the tool over to the new design system Codex
    • We adjusted the styling for the values of monolingual text statements to make the language easier to distinguish from the value (phab:T280774)

The data from sources can be updated regularly, either for everything, or just changed entries (if the source has a "recent changes" equivalent).
    • Wikidata:Zotero/Cita - is a Wikidata addon for Zotero that adds citations (i.e., what other items an item cites) metadata support to this open source reference management software, using cites work (P2860) information available from Wikidata, and enabling users to easily contribute missing data.

Upcoming Event in Auckland[edit]

You might be interested in an upcoming event in Auckland. Wikimedia Aotearoa is having a WikiCon! WikiCon Aotearoa 2024 is the annual gathering for all new and experienced editors of Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikisource projects. Anyone interested in editing is welcome to attend. This conference is organized by Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ). It aims to provide training to new editors, to encourage editors to learn new skills, to grow the Wiki community in Auckland and to ensure that we have a fun weekend. Food and refreshments provided.  

When: Saturday 23 March - Sunday 24 March 2024

Where: Auckland University of Technology - Sir Paul Reeves Building - WG Building 2 Governor Fitzroy Place, Auckland.

Francisco Hernandez (politician) moved to draftspace[edit]

User:Villian Factman saw fit to publish the article, erroneously stating that Hernandez is an MP having succeeded Shaw. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Yeah I saw they'd moved it and was a bit surprised. I haven't seen anything definitively saying Hernandez will replace Shaw or when, so I guess we wait for something to appear and then we can cite and publish the article (with whatever other edits are needed at the time). Looking for John Wilson MNZM[edit]

Kia ora, I hope you might be able to assist me. I have created a Wikidata item for a book Christchurch - Swamp to City. Christchurch - Swamp to City (Q125768136) It was written by Dr John Wilson, a Christchurch historian who appears to be notable. I expected to find a Wikipedia article or at least a Wikidata item about John Wilson. I tried a query in Wikidata, but so far my search has been unsuccessful. It doesn't help that there are a great many people in Wikidata called John Wilson. Because he is (or has been) an author and academic, I wondered if he had come up in the NZ thesis project. Here is a link to a webpage containing some information about him.[1] This source indicates he was born in 1943 [2]. Hi Marshelec. I've had a look. His Canterbury thesis does not appear to be in the thesis project data. I think this is likely his Harvard thesis though https://id.lib.harvard.edu/alma/990040114010203941/catalog I don't have any Canterbury theses supervised by a John Wilson.
VIAF have unfortunately got his record conflated with a British fishing writer John Wilson who was also born 1943 but who died in 2018 (https://viaf.org/viaf/93591094/#Wilson,_John,_1943-....). The April birth date might or might not be our Wilson (I saw it referenced in a NZ library record but as they might have got it from VIAF rather than the other way round I would ignore it without confirmation from a source that couldn't have come from VIAF). Interestingly one of the VIAF aliases is John Malcolm Wilson - which is his full name, according to his 2007 MNZM (see the list here) I found a photo of him here https://teara.govt.nz/en/community-contribution/44927/john-wilson-te-ara-writer-2007
So I don't think he is in Wikidata yet, but you have plenty there to make a new record. I would make the label John Malcolm Wilson, so you can easily find it again, and add appropriate aliases etc. It would be worth contacting VIAF and asking them to split out John Malcolm Wilson from the fisherman (tell them the books our John wrote) and then his VIAF can be added to his Wikidata.

Marshelec, I've had a nosey but the coverage by The Press on Wilson for the birthday honours was rather brief: "Christchurch heritage advocates Pam Wilson and Dr John Wilson are not related, but have both been made members of the order. Pam Wilson promoted conservation of significant sites and buildings with the Historic Places Trust for 25 years and remains an adviser on building registration. John Wilson has raised awareness of heritage with his research and writing on historic buildings and places for more than 30 years." ProQuest 314810533 Schwede66 00:21, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I shall note that Wilson "was born and grew up in South Canterbury" according to his Te Ara profile. VIAF has a 12 April 1943 birthdate. I'd say that 12 April 1943 is correct. Here is his father's obituary. Mac Wilson (as he was known) lived in Timaru from 1938 and moved to Christchurch in 1951 to be minister at Knox Church. Our historian was seven at that point. That fits the Te Ara bio. Schwede66 00:45, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A+W NZ are bringing back the New Zealand Women in Architecture WikiProject Walking Tour and Wikipedia Edit-a-thon for 2024 with two concurrent in-person events in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland on Saturday 18th May 2024. We will build from the good work of 2023 and welcome any contributions, in-person or off-site.

'Named after' on Wikidata[edit]

Hi Tamsin! Do you know if there's a best practice way to use the 'named after' property on Wikidata? I have a hill, Coronation Peak, likely named after the Coronation of Elizabeth II. Would it be better to point to the coronation event (Q3797766) or the person herself (Q9682)? I could see being more specific as something potentially detrimental (e.g. Coronation Peak wouldn't come up in a query of locations named after Elizabeth II). --Prosperosity (talk) 22:39, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Prosperosity. Interesting question! I think I would argue that the peak is named after the coronation event and not the Queen, and so the way you've modelled it is correct. And if I query for everything named after QEII (https://w.wiki/9yix) then I don't find anything with coronation or jubilee in the label, which suggests to me that noone is pointing to the person rather than the event. Although there are only 90 items somehow!
The question then becomes if you were looking for things named in honour of the Queen that included her coronation, her jubilees, etc, could you find them through this modelling? The queen is listed as the only participant in her coronation (!) but not directly from the Silver Jubilee item. However there is a list of significant events on Elizabeth II (Q9682) and I would suggest people looking for items connected to the Queen would probably think to look for items connected to those events as well. It's certainly useful to be able to distinguish, I think, between items named after her and items commemorating a particular event connected to her. I note that the Silver Jubilee Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II (Q7516094) has a couple of things linked through named after (event item), and one through commemorates (event item), so this wouldn't be a new way of doing things.
If you want to tie Coronation Peak a bit more directly to QEII then you could consider adding a statement saying it commemorates QEII, I think, as that's a bit looser than named after and therefore arguably correct. There are only six (?!) items commemorating QEII currently though so it's hard to judge consistency of modelling. https://w.wiki/9yj4 It could be useful to find a bunch of other Coronation things and add similar modeling to them to make it easier for other people to find and copy that modelling.   • A new UI mode is available for the online validator for EntitySchemas. It represents validation reports as a table rather than a very long string, and replaces most links with hyperlinks with some of the text behind them; making them easier to read. Currently being tested at https://shex-validator.toolforge.org/packages/shex-webapp/doc/shex-simple-improved.html, we are looking for participants to evaluate this tool. A new Wikidata item for an IBA report[edit]

Hi DrThneed, this is a simple one. Please guide me in creating a new Wikidata item for this report: [3] My main question is: what the most appropriate choice for: Instance of ??. As a secondary question, what label/ title would you suggest. The reason for asking is that there is a recommended citation on the page after the cover, including a title, but this is not what is on the front page, so I am left a bit confused. Hi @Marshelec. Instance of report (Q10870555) would probably be appropriate (that's a subclass of document & scientific publication). The fact they've given a different title in the suggested citation is a little odd, but I would suggest that most users would look for under the title as it is displayed on the front page, so I'd add that as the label and the value for the title property, but then add the alternative title as an alias.
