Many times, such questions are posted by people seeking information about a particular subject, and are quite appropriate for the reference desk, so if you encounter such a question on the pump or elsewhere, please try to be helpful and direct the questioner to the reference desk instead.

However, some requests are just so off-the-wall that they would be inappropriate even on the reference desk. In keeping with the spirit of archiving other silly things, this page lists some of those strange requests for the purpose of a little harmless amusement. See also Wikipedia:Talk page highlights.

Bad tire

Where do I post a complaint? I have a tire with a bubble on the side wall, and your agent (Discount Tire) is claimimg it is road hazard. What do you think?

I talked to my psychologist Monday and told him that perhaps I would do better getting in the Engineering field. He told me I might do better with a degree in Veterinary Technology. He knows I am better at science (Chemistry, Biology, and Medicine) then I am at Math, and getting a Bachelor's degree in engineering is more relient on higher math then veterinary technology. What do you think? And what are the advantages/disadvantages in being in these fields and getting an education in them (through comparing the two for the advantages/disadvantages)?

The engineering I want to take in school is Electrical/Electronic and Mechanical engineering.

HELP!!!!! Anybody have a good remedy for massive welts and itching?!?!?!?!?!

Forgive me if this is covered somewhere or this isn't the proper forum but I'm squirming and yelping from intense itching and almost body wide welts from bites. I live in Florida (am hoping to move to a drier climate, at least less mosquitoe infested soon) and this season is particularly bad. I've tried ice, cold water, alcohol (applied to the skin) benadryl spray and am still covered in welts and going nuts. Any help would be appreciated. I think the humor in this lies less in the quirkiness of the request (and the lack of understanding on the part of the writer about what we do) than in the laughable English. (It should be noted that the name with which the posting was originally signed was an English one. My guess is the guy is a wedding videographer, shooting a south indian wedding for the first time and is looking for a classical soundtrack to play over the video. I was fortunate enough to visit a Hutterite Colony in Manatoba last year with a group of Australian Farmers, several of us are sorry that we did not buy some of your wonderful cotton mats (woven or crochet I think. difficulty trying to open a packaged food

I bought some " Reser's original potato salad" and had myself a terrible time trying to open the plastic package , the plastic is so terribly strong , I was working on it for about an hour , I ruined both of my thumb fingernails trying to get them into the crack in order to open the top . I finally founf a knife which was pointy and thin enough to finally gain entry beween the lips which separate the top from the bottom , I had to apply a lot of force in order to achieve a separation.I am sure a woman would not have had any luck in getting this package open. As far as woman's house work and the tools for such house work are concerned , every inventor and company are striving to make housework for women easier , your company does not seem to share this philosophy. I wish you would have printed a telephone number on the package under which I could have reached your customer servive , it would have made it a lot easier for me to voice my complaint , but your company seems to strive to make things a lot harder in every department. My humble Answer: This sound like a Laser--a close cousin. Try googling/wiking IR lasers.

Also. most Neon signs are filled with neon; if you want any color other than "clear red" you need use tubing with a colored fluorescent coating to produce the color. The small amount of UV invariably produced by the excited Neon (Plasma) lights the coating. Other gases, like Krypton, Xenon, etc, produce different colors but are very rarely used. Other Uses?

It is possible to charge capacitors directly from an NST's AC output. A Marx-type generator can use AC or DC input; a voltage multiplier uses an AC input. The multiplier, however, Does use rectifiers in its stages.The Marx generator charges caps in parallel to discharge them thru spark gaps in series. This would be cycled at the twice the input frequency--120 Hz with 60 cycle.

Please mention no Neon transformers were ever made over 60 mA output. Any 120 mA devices, or greater, are for bombarding (bench burning-in of Neon tubes.)

Also, an AC transformer is 98% efficient--the switch mode "electronic Ballast"-type do Not exceed this efficiency. They are only lighter, quieter, and won't drip tar on the rug if they get hot.

Switch-mode Electronic Ballasts are simply 85% efficient compared to the 35% or so of an analog power supply.

Switch-mode transformers are No Good for Tesla coils--the back RF will fry them, instantly. Plus they are not designed to work into a capacitive load. Perhaps an RF filter can be added, but their switching frequency of 15-25 kHz sometimes approaches the operating frequency of the Tesla coil, and precludes this.

An RF filter must always be added between the output of a transformer-type NST and a Tesla coil, or the back EMF can cause internal carbon shorts in the asphalt potting. These can be fixed by removing the tar, but it is very delicate, messy work.

Transformer-type NST's have a center tap (grounded) when they produce about 10 kV or more. This makes for two hi voltage output windings, insulated for 1/2 the output. Saves insulation and costs. It is safer to run this way, too.

The current-limit in a transformer-type is a magnet "shunt"--a split in the normal "tongue" of the center lamination that is designed to reduce flux on load. This is the opposite of a normal transformer, which will provide much more current than designed for if shorted, until it burns out a winding.

The current limit is to provide a high voltage starting "pulse" to the tube, then to limit current, and, hence, power to the tube. The short-circuit current is equal to the rated current, an AC ammeter can simply be placed across the hi voltage outputs to test it. The average short-circuit/full-load output voltage is 800 volts.

Also, the asphalt in old-fashioned transformers is for Noise--not weatherproofing or insulation., They are well-sealed in a steel box for outside use. The newer ones for indoor are potted in epoxy. They will run fine without tar--in fact, if asphalt removed (Very Carefully!), and they are immersed in oil, the shunt can then be bypassed for safe, short bursts of even greater current. There is much less chance of an internal short, too.

Also, many newer transformer-types have ground-fault interrupters ("GFI's") built-in, which will trip/fry if it is used in a Tesla coil. These should be obviously not be used in Tesla coils, or the GFI removed/bypassed. [IP removed]

Hey there, I'd love to talk soon. I've had a really stressful and anxiety-filled few months. There've been a huge amount of layoffs at my job; I still work there, but I've been forced into a new position that I did not want and do not like. It's exhausted me and left me anxious about my future at the company. I've also had major sleep issues that have gotten worse in the past year or so (longer story I can detail when we talk), but that's also left me exhausted, and I feel like I have barely enough energy to get through most days. As a result, I have difficulty tracking non-work items (as you can probably tell, lol). I also had an emergency tooth pull recently, which was about as fun as you might imagine.

Overall, I still have my health and apartment, so it's not like I have the hardest life in the world or anything; I'm still okay. But I'm less optimistic and life has become a lot more stressful/frustrating to manage.

Anyway: maybe we can shoot for Friday afternoon? This might change based on what's happening with work (I have *way* more meetings now) and my energy levels, so I'll add the disclaimer now that I may end up postponing it. But as of now, that timeframe should be clear.
