Guys what's going on here? ugen64 put it up as a win for white (which it appears to be) which Jasabella changed to a draw. Are you unsure of who won? In that case you should continue playing. Gkhan 08:49, May 18, 2005 (UTC)

No. Look, this is silly. I'm technically breaking the rules with this, but I don't think anyone will seriously object. 34... Kf8 (34... Kh8? 35. Qxc8+ Qd8 36. Qxd8++) 35. Qxc8 Qd8! (35...Kf7? 36. Forced win might be a little bit strong, but Black has to give up both Rook and Queen to avoid the immediate forced mate, and I'm reasonably sure that there's a series of forced checks leading to mate following, but with quite a number of variations. I used to be able to analyse this sort of thing in my head for any number of variations and moves, now I get - not lost, so much as bored - after about ten moves. If I had a board in front of me I'd probably find a quicker mate than that, but it might involve White setting up a move, leaving Black to make an unforced move, which is less elegant.-gadfium 19:55, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

I had a chess program analyze the position. (Yes, I was lazy.) The mate is actually only 3 moves after the queen is captured. After 34... Kf8 there is a mate in 5. Some of this is repeating what's above, but in full: 35. Qxc8+ Qd8 (if ...Kf7 then 36. Qe6+ Kf8 37. Qe8#) 36. Qxd8+ Kf7 37. Qd6. For all but 2 Black moves, we proceed with 38. Qe6+ followed by 39. Qe8#. If 37... g6 or 37... g5 then 38. Re7+ Kf8 (or ...Kg8) 39. Qd8#. I like forced mates. :) Eric119 19:22, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

We should probably update the rules to clearly reflect the procedures for resigning, and agreeing to a draw (though the latter is of course quite unproductive in this tournament, as you'll just have to play another game). This is causing unnecessary confusion. JRM · Talk 14:18, 2005 May 18 (UTC)

I don't think the game was lost. In fact, 33. ... b4 was the losing move; other moves such as Qd7, Qf6 or Qd6 would probably have won easily. Sam Hocevar 1 July 2005 19:04 (UTC)
