Done STORMTRACKER 94 Go Irish! 16:41, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I skimmed through your last 500 or so, and see you're doing a lot of vandal fighting, so keep that up. I do see an AFD (Major League Wiffle (MLW), but I also see a DYK (Baseball uniform). Your last 500 seem pretty good to me. Also, did you see Paplebon's blown saves? They have really been disappointing for the Sox. STORMTRACKER 94 Go Irish! 16:48, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Did you actually read what was in here before you "fixed" the article? 76.100.210.208 (talk) 17:35, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I just fixed the references and external links. That paragraph you removed is really not necessary as I looked of what you did so you are right about that. -- RyRy5 (talkReview) 17:38, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

The Reformed Barnstar
For changing your ways on Wikipedia, and for your contributions, I award you the reformed barnstar. well done. Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 17:53, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm afraid I can't, not now anyway. Excuse me, but um, im kinda...errr...drunkish. Long story :P Anyway, I'll let you know tomorrow, but its for the DYK's. Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 18:09, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about that, I just don't want to be stupid. This isn't something that happens rarely, I promise you. Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 18:12, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey Ryan, how's your adoption going? King iMatthew 2008 19:47, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

You're doing a great job! Keep up the good work! I recommend keep doing what you're doing, finish Steve's adoption program, and wait a month or two. Then, sign up to get an admin coach, which generally take a while to get, but it's worth it. Coaching generally takes a month or so, so you have time, just remember that! I'm currently going through admin coaching, and it's very helpful, I can tell you that! King iMatthew 2008 19:58, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I noticed that on your page. Good job on the GA, as well. How does that work? Can someone just "award" themselves the honor of helping out in the promotion? Basketball110 My story/Tell me yours 17:55, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

THIS IS TO THANK YOU FOR SIGNING MY GUEST BOOK:

Contribs

Contribs look great! There is one that I would ask you about: for instance, at [1], you reverted a removal of a large amount of text, which is usually a telltale sign of vandalism, I agree - in this case, though, I think the removal was a good one. It was an unsourced speculative paragraph in violation of WP:UNDUE, I think I would have left the text out and not reverted it back in.

It looks like you're steering clear of controversy, which is a good thing. The reverts that you're doing look solid, and you're staying well within the lines of what you should be doing at this point. Great work!

It looks like you're using popups for most of them; that's probably also a good thing, since it means that you're not putting the rollback tool at risk. At some point, I'd encourage you to start thinking about which of them you could have used rollback for (what's the use of the tool if you don't use it?), but I think you're right to stay with popups for right now, until you really really feel confident. You don't want to end up with the rollback tool removed over a simple mistake.

I'm also pleased to see that you're not just reverting vandalism, but are also taking an active role in improving the writing of articles, such as creating leads, etc.

Ryan, this is really good work. You're making great progress. Keep listening to Steve, keep working hard, and I know you're going to be one of our very best contributors. - Philippe 21:23, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the barnstar! I appreciate your kind words very much. - Philippe 21:54, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I have commented at the above AfD and rewritten the article. I would ask you to reconsider your comment. Thanks, EJF (talk) 22:31, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

 Done -- RyRy5 (talkReview) 22:42, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, it looks like it's going to be kept now! To me, saving an article is a worthwhile as a DYK! Just maybe try to remember to do a thorough search for sources (Google News archives is best) before endorsing the deletion of an article, as it is best to avoid deleting content that can be sourced. But thanks for your input! Regards, EJF (talk) 22:48, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Re:Baseball uniform

Wow, really nice work, Ryan! I don't feel that it's quite ready for GA (lead should be two paragraphs; the sections should be a bit longer) but it's close! Nousernamesleftcopper, not wood 00:01, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

By the way, a word of advice: Use the preview button. You have over a hundred edits to this article, yet it's not even a good article yet. Instead of making lots of little edits, try making one big edit. Nousernamesleftcopper, not wood 02:10, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

It turns out when you reverted the content deletion on this article you missed a few bits - but I have fixed it up for you. It helps to check the article history as well to see if it was just a one off bad edit, or a whole series of them. ;-) Wongm (talk) 00:19, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Canvassing

Don't mean to crack it at you, but this is quite bad. I have a review too, but canvassing people is something that isn't looked on well at all. It's not about your edits that you have, or about proving yourself to anyone. Be happy in your edits, and know that when people will be able to review them, they will. Thanks. As well as this « Milk's Favorite Cookie ( talk / contribs) 03:00, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
Butting in here RyRy; the issue isn't so much the asking for reviews, it's repeating to ask when people are obviously busy or when, for whatever reason, they've decided they'd rather not do a review. Generally, asking nicely once should be enough (as you did with me!). dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 03:06, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
  • True, true, just know that when people feel to review you, they will, like my review. I never asked anyone to review me really. And asking them to mention your edit count is not a good thing. Edit count really means nothing, something I've learned. It's about the quality of your contributions, not the quantity of them. Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 03:08, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh, I guess once is enough then. I was a little confused and I thought that asking someone to review you was canvassing. I understand now. Thank you all for telling me. And about asking about my edit count, I just wanted to see if others think my edits are quality edits.-- RyRy5 (talkReview) 03:10, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

AWC move

The AWC was moved to the project space a few months back and was nearly destroyed. Bascially, all the freedoms we have here were stripped; because there was no user in control of the page, people cut anything they wanted. As some users felt that the entire page (as in barnstars for improving articles) was worthless, the entire project was jeopardized until it was moved back. See here. --SharkfaceT/C 22:55, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

RyRy, I saw the icon, on your userpage, about the GA, but I checked the history, it appears you only made reverts to the article. Would you mind explaining this to me? Here will be fine, I'm watching your page. Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 00:25, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, I did contribute to it a while back, probably before I met you. I actually thought back then that it would be a good time to nom it for GA but others decided not to. If you thin k that's not enough, I would be glad to remove it. -- RyRy5 (talkReview) 00:28, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Hm, checked. And yep, i went past before you were on Wikipedia. You added a ref or two. But really, just be sure you aren't taking credit when credit is due. I have a GA icon on my userpage, for Martha Logan. Check the history of that, I was the major contributor, I don't deny I got help, but I can still say I did most of it. See the issue? Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 00:30, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

I see, and I understand, I'll remove it right away. By the way, when do you consider a user being a "major contributer" to an article?--RyRy5 (talkReview) 00:32, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

(zomg double ec -_-) Well, see how Gary King made large edits to that article, or how I made many edits to Martha Logan. And yes, well said Julian :P. But yes, please remove it. Thanks Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 00:41, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks everone. I understand what I major contributer is now. I know I don't "own" articles BTW. I guess you can call me a major contributer to baseball uniform, right? --RyRy5 (talkReview) 00:42, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Issue applies to DYKs too. As I explained, just nominating it isn't a good reason to say its YOUR DYK. Metros (talk) 00:43, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, you're definitely a major contributor too that. And, I shouldn't have said you "own" articles. I just meant that generally to go along with the previous comment. Apologies. « Milk's Favorite Cookie ( talk / contribs) 00:44, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Revert?

What was the issue here there caused you to rollback? Metros (talk) 02:01, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

I noticed you removed this when replying above. If you are not willing to provide an explanation, this will be assumed to be your final warning about misusing rollback, as you have failed to explain the use. If you have a reason which will mitigate the belief that this was a misuse of rollback, and therefore this shouldn't count as a final warning, please give it. Paul Yeratz (talk) 02:56, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
He did reply here. Still waiting on a follow-up to that though. And I don't know if a final warning is really necessary since he's had it taken away on several occasions now. Metros (talk) 03:02, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
My apologies, I missed that reply. Regardless, the fact that if he doesn't satisfactorally explain himself then this will be default-deemed an abuse of rollback stands. Naturally, whether it's warning or revocation is up to you and other administrators. Paul Yeratz (talk) 03:12, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Smile!

Rollback

Hi, I've removed your rollback again. You either aren't paying attention, or you still don't understand what vandalism is. Specifically, I'm talking about this revert and your explanation here. A mistake doesn't bother me- we all make them. But, you apparently even looked at the edit again when asked about it, and still thought it was vandalism. I still suspect you're so concerned with racking up a new high score that you're not thinking about what you're doing. Friday (talk) 14:25, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Sorry RyRy, I agree with Friday if you used Rollback for that edit. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 14:30, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Sigh, I did point out my opinions here, yet I felt they were not really considered. I did say how I felt, and I thought that as the one who's adopted and is teaching him, that my opinion would have had some weight. Sorry RyRy, but you haven't demonstrated the ability to use rollback effectively. Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 14:38, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello, everyone. I am very sorry for what I have done with rollback. I promise that I will not ask or even accept an offer of rollback due to my recent actions. If I do ask, please decline my request. I will only accept or ask an admin if and when my adoption is over and when many others agree I can handle rollback again without so much mishap that may occur in the future. I would especially like to say sorry to Metros, Friday, Keeper76, and my adopter, Steve Crossin for always having to follow my actions and possibly causing stress on your shoulder. I have learned from my wrong actions and I intend to learn from them. I hope that users will trust me in the future and that I would become a more responsible user here at wikipedia. Thank you, and I apologize. Cheers. -- RyRy5 (talkReview) 01:41, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, I'm glad that you have said this. Sorry I didn't respond before, I've been relatively busy, to be honest. Anyway, I'll be around if you need anything. Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 23:58, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I got it (LOL, I forgot I could look at the history). I like what you did with Realist2's page. It looks great. :) Cheers, Kodster (You talkin' to me?) (Stuff I messed up) 20:36, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Indeed, its great, i made a few tweeks to it but over all im well impressed!! Thanx, Cookie still hasnt got back to me about a logo tho, i think hes busy. Realist2 ('Come Speak To Me') 20:40, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Would you be able to change my color to metallic gold, is it me, the more i look at that silver, it looks more lilac? Realist2 ('Come Speak To Me') 02:47, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I decided to keep the original, that gold was too bright for me, thanx tho. ;-) Realist2 ('Come Speak To Me') 03:48, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

User page

Would you mind doing my page too? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. Cheers, Kodster (You talkin' to me?) (Stuff I messed up) 22:49, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh, I don't know. Something similar to Realist2's page (our pages are somewhat similar). Thanks. BTW, don't you ever get warnings like, "Wikipedia isn't Myspace" and such? I don't think that what you're doing is wrong, but I'd be surprised if an admin didn't take it out on you. Cheers, Kodster (You talkin' to me?) (Stuff I messed up) 00:38, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh, okay. :) Thanks for all the good work. Cheers, Kodster (You talkin' to me?) (Stuff I messed up) 00:50, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Hippie

Hi. Could you give hippie a break for a moment? I've been trying to restore the last good version, but each time I try to fix it, I'm getting an edit conflict. Thanks. Viriditas (talk) 00:30, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

No problem. Give me a second to restore the last good version. It's complicated because the article has been under constant attack from vandals. Sorry. Viriditas (talk) 00:34, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
No, I want it to reflect the correct version. Give me a second here. Viriditas (talk) 00:36, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Ok, go from there, but keep in mind that the peer review (linked on talk) requested that multiple links and extraneous links be removed. Viriditas (talk) 00:38, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
It should be ok now. Feel free to make any changes. You apparently started copyediting right after it was vandalized. It should be ok for you now. Viriditas (talk) 00:41, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Any help you can offer with the peer review will earn you a barnstar! :) Viriditas (talk) 00:47, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

OOPS

Sorry about that change on the Texas page. it was a mistake. Oldag07 (talk) 02:04, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Yea, i am a little clutsy today. I had the Texas article in my User:Oldag07/Sandbox, and I wanted to change it. so i blanked out the Texas page thinking it was my sandbox. we fixed it. no harm done. Thanks Oldag07 (talk) 02:38, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

User page help

They both look great, and I'm pleased to see you doing them! The layouts in particular are good, though I might stay away from the electric teal color. :-) - Philippe 02:46, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

AFDs

Hi Ryan,

For a while, you were commenting on AFDs. I liked that, because it's an excellent opportunity to express ideas and it's good discipline to learn to associate policies and guidelines with real world cases. While I haven't checked your contribs closely, it seems like I haven't seen your name there as much. Is there a reason why not? If Steve has asked you to hold off on that or something, please do as he asks, of course, but if not, I'd like to encourage you to think about doing that again, but challenge you to make sure that each and every !vote you make is supported by a policy that you clearly identify. - Philippe 02:49, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Note: I have notified Steve of this suggestion and told him that I invite his opinion; he may disagree with me, of course, and I'd encourage you to do as he suggests in that case. - Philippe 02:53, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Of course, it's not a problem for you not to contribute there: lots of people don't. I happen to think it's a GREAT training-ground with a ton of real-world scenarios, but obviously you should poke around, explore the wiki, and find places that you enjoy contributing. I didn't even know we HAD a userpage help area until you pointed it out to me.  :-) - Philippe 02:57, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Ryan, perhaps you should do the deletion assignment first? Just an idea. Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 06:51, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Butting in here.;-). This issue is of particular concern to me after coming across this 'challenge' at the Award Center. See my various comments on the project's talk page concerning this issue, e.g. my comment at the end of this section. Participating in AfDs may be a "good learning experience" for a novice editor, but that learning experience can have real consequences for Wikipedia, both in terms of losing potentially valuable content and in terms of discouraging the new editors who have created the articles. Observe this latest AfD I'm participating in, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/El-A-Kru. If Ryan is going to continue participating in these AfDs, I strongly suggest:

  1. limiting participation to his area(s) of expertise and in which he has personally done significant mainspace editing.
  2. that he personally do searches for sources, rather than relying on what the nominator has said, and that he get some practice in web search techniques.
  3. that he returns to deletion discussions after he's 'voted' to see if the situation has changed. Here's a prime example Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/James V. Downton.
