Scott's Wikipedia Microblog

This is my microblog about my day-to-day experiences as an editor on the Wikipedia project.

One of my feature suggestions got implemented - being able to filter user contributions to show page creations only. See item in this week's Tech News.

Despite the fact that I spent a long time programming in Perl, which has often come under fire for its appearance, I've come to the conclusion that our template language has the worst syntax in the world. It could only be worse if we had to use a novelty language which is designed to hurt your eyes.

(Hmm, I should update this more often.) Apparently I'm the 4,182nd most active Wikipedia editor! I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing....

Did you know... that there's an automatically-updated visualization of the printed size of Wikipedia? It's done with templates, too. Very clever.

I made a silly thing: {{ClockBlock}}. On the other hand, in the Wikipedia of 2213 it may actually be useful.

Editing with your real name for fun and profit!, by A. N. Editor. Well, maybe not profit. Hi, I'm Scott.

The support comments at Jason Quinn's RfA actually give me hope that the RfA process as it currently works isn't totally broken. Really great to see such a large application of common sense.

You use Wikipedia how?

Every animated GIF on Wikipedia, one at a time. Seriously. Bizarrely fascinating.

Things I did this month: (a) Hit 10,000 edits. (b) Reached ten years of being a Wikipedia editor. It's hard to believe how far we've come since I joined; I'm so proud of what we achieved, and of myself for having been a part of it for this long. And yet, we've only just gotten started. Here's looking forward to my 20th anniversary.

Spotted nominative determinism in the wild on Wikipedia: User:Access Denied.

Just happened across a WikiWorld cartoon for the first time in a very long time. I didn't realize that they stopped being made in 2008. A pity; that was a great little series.

I didn't know what "second cousin once removed" meant, so looked at our article, Cousin. That part was just text, so I added some family trees to illustrate the terms. Better! And now I get it.

Just encountered our list of missing editors. I recognize a lot of names on that list. Sad.

I'm always interested in the early history of WP, both out of nostalgia and research interest. Category:Redirects with old history forms an excellent index into the earliest versions of our articles.

Somebody set up some cute namespace redirect tricks. WP:-), WP:-(

I made a thing. Wikipedia:Ten Year Society.

When you contribute to Wikipedia, you're contributing to COMMUNISM. My favorite out of this year's WikiSym papers.

The Wikipedia Library! Online research libraries are giving out free access to Wikipedia editors. Go apply!

How have I never come across the Editor's index to Wikipedia before? It's intense. I love it.

Some excellent commentary on Philip Roth making an absurd hoo-ha about his article.

In the course of researching the history of Holland House, I encountered its early owners, the Rich family, who didn't have any coverage here. Now they do, including a large and fascinating family tree that required much piecing together.

EVERYTHING: List of How It's Made episodes

Common sense failure: "In popular culture" at its very worst.
