Hi, would you be able to do a much tighter crop of the marker so we can see what it says? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 21:59, 16 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

When did you post the Taal Volcano animation?[edit]

The filename was: Phreatic eruption of Taal Volcano, 12 January 2020 (reduced).gif. You posted it as the picture for "In the news," somewhere around 14 January. I would like to know the actual date, and the time in UTC. I checked the revision histories for the Main Page and for In the news, but couldn't find this information there. If I ever need this kind of information again, is there a way in which I can look it up myself? Ubzerver (talk) 08:35, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pic crop[edit]

You helped me with many images, - here I come again. In (my) File:Crocus, Eibingen.jpg, black parts are due to my wrong cropping on my PC. Could you crop them in the present image? ... or teach me how to do that? ... or would you think I better upload a pic I croppped correctly, and have this deleted? ... or what? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:45, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I found help already. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:53, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Would you be able to crop this image to a head and shoulders portrait? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:02, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pictured / shown[edit]

Hi David

I reverted your change from "pictured" to "shown", as captions on the main page always say "pictured" that's the standard usage, and it is consistent across the different sections. There is no conceptual difference betwen the terms "pictured", "depicted" and "shown" anyway, they all mean the same thing. In any case once a change you make is reverted, you should never reinstate it that change, that is considered WP:WHEEL warring. Please self-revert. Thanks  — Amakuru (talk) 16:17, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your change from "pictured" to "shown",
Amakuru: My change was from "pictured" to "diagram shown". These differ substantially, as the former conveyed that the actual specimens were pictured (hence the error report to which I responded).
When you changed "diagram shown" to "diagram pictured", it was not a reversion (in either a technical sense or a meaningful one).
as captions on the main page always say "pictured" that's the standard usage, and it is consistent across the different sections.
Having focused on the main page's images for years (and routinely participated in TFA image curation and issue resolution, at a coordinator's request), I can assure you that "shown" is our longstanding alternative wording, used when specifying a picture (e.g., "map shown", "satellite image shown", "video shown", "depiction shown", "frontispiece shown", "schematic shown", etc.) – not just at TFA, but across the main page.
For various reasons, I haven't been very active recently. (I responded to this ping by Floquenbeam.) Perhaps the usage of "shown" has declined amid my absence. If so, I seriously doubt that its omission was calculated. (If you're aware of a discussion in which such a decision was reached, please cite it.) In any case, the practice isn't something that I invented or imagined.
There is no conceptual difference betwen the terms "pictured", "depicted" and "shown" anyway, they all mean the same thing.
The difference is primarily one of style. It's linguistically clumsy to state that a picture is pictured, as discussed in the past (sometimes amid edit requests).
In any case once a change you make is reverted, you should never reinstate it that change, that is considered WP:WHEEL warring.
As noted above, I don't consider your change a reversion, as the result differs materially from previous revisions. You're entitled to disagree (and I sincerely appreciate your willingness to message me with this request, in spite of that view), but there's no need to address me as though I'm a newbie.
Regardless, I'm not here to incite conflict. If you still want me to self-revert, please let me know. —David Levy 18:03, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Since I got a ping, I'll opine:
First, David, thanks for fixing the technical issue last night. I suspected you were the person for the job.
Second, at the risk of alienating you both, I think the argument about "pictured" or "shown" is about 98% pointless. They're both fine, and arguments that either one is better than the other aren't really persuasive to me. Rather than argue about what's marginally better, what edit(s) count as technically a revert, and what's technically standard practice, why not just say "Isn't it odd, the silly things that can sometimes come between people Floq respects", and leave it at whatever wording is there now (I purposefully haven't looked, although from context above I gather David would be the lucky one). Or, if you'd like me to flip a coin and report the results, I could do that too, if you trust me to. --Floquenbeam (talk) 18:30, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Floquenbeam: To be clear, I don't believe that a reversion is ever justifiable on the basis of a technicality. I reverted Amakuru's edit because I viewed it as a new change stemming from an erroneous belief (which I aspired to address in my summary).
I also want to stress that I don't perceive the matter as one of Earth-shattering importance. In the interest of goodwill, if Amakuru finds my above reply uncompelling, I'm happy to forgo a coin flip and relinquish the status quo. —David Levy 18:52, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah well, in the face of such abundant goodwill and reasonableness how can I possibly be the one to break it! I still think we should just say "pictured" for all pictures but it is, as you say a minor matter in the grand scheme of things, so let's just leave it as is for today.  — Amakuru (talk) 20:00, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:07, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled[edit]

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

It is inspired by such past events as the Wikipedia Day tradition in New York City.
