What is a melon?[edit]

What should be covered in this template? Currently, it seems to cover all edible cucurbits except for Squashes (Cucurbita) and Cucumbers. There are various definitions, but I don't see that the coverage of the article really conforms to any common definition.

Melon could mean:

A) Any edible cucurbit
B) Any edible cucurbit with a common name including the word melon
C) Any sweet edible cucurbit (i.e., cucurbits used as culinary fruit)
D) Watermelons and musk-melons specifically (Citrullus lanatus and Cucumis melo)

This article seems to be using definition B. Definitions C & D are more in line with how most dictionaries define melon ([1], [2], [3]). Bitter melons and Winter melons are also called bitter/winter gourds, probably precisely because they don't correspond to the common definition of melon as a sweet fruit. I'd like to remove the the non-sweet "melons" from this list.Plantdrew (talk) 22:25, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
