Verification[edit]

For some reason, two sources, http://siteresources.worldbank.org/INTSOMALIA/Resources/conflictinsomalia.pdf and http://lnweb18.worldbank.org/es.PDF, were formatted as a single link. The first source, "Conflic in Somalia," makes no mention of "Cisman Mahmoud" and the second source is a dead link. Furthermore, in searching the World Bank website, I did not find any matches for "Cisman Mahmoud". A Google search for the same turns up a lot of Wikipedia mirrors, but among the other results, nothing that jumps out as a reliable source.

The "Majeerteen Sultanate" source is questionable; it actually credits another source: Issa-Salwe, Abdisalam M. (1996): The Collapse of the Somali State: The Impact of the Colonial Legacy, London: Haan Associates. This is problematic because Wikipedia is linking to a possible copyvio, and we can only assume that the website is presenting the original source's text verbatim.

However, the "Majeerteen Sultanate" source does provide an alternate spelling for the clan, "Ismaan Mahamuud". I am guessing this is a preferred English spelling, mainly because it omits the letter "C", which has completely different usage in English than it does in Somali. For this reason I propose moving this article to "Ismaan Mahamuud" (see following section). This spelling also turned up an additional source on the World Bank website, http://siteresources.worldbank.org/INTLAWJUSTINST/Resources/GundelTheroleoftraditionalstructures_1.doc, though it does not appear in the aformentioned "Conflict in Somalia." I have used this source to back up an existing sentence that was previously unattributed (however, I have re-worded the sentence so it better reflects what the source says.) -- Gyrofrog (talk) 16:45, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Correction: The "Conflict in Somalia" source does mention "Osman Mahmud", in a lineage chart (Figure A-1, p. 55). But thus far I have not seen anything in the source that supports the assertion made in the article. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 19:03, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cisman Mahmoud → Ismaan Mahamuud — I am guessing this is a preferred English spelling, mainly because it omits the letter "C", which has completely different usage in English than it does in Somali. P.S. I think "Osman Mahamud" might be another viable name; apparently it's the root of the name of the Osmanya script. "Osman Mahmoud" is the more common English spelling of the name. The "C" in Somali is the Somali equivalent of the ayin in Arabic, both of which are used to denote a particular guttural sound. Guttural or pharyngeal sounds are quite common amongst Afro-Asiatic languages. I've been WP:BOLD and renamed the page. Middayexpress (talk) 12:33, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV[edit]

There's persistent introduction of non-encyclopedic material from unreliable sources which I removed in good faith. The IP@92.8.96.162 is also introducing controversial material with dubious sources in Abdullahi Yusuf. I reverted both pages but if it continues page level protection may be needed. Pending removal of unsourced material[edit]

There are massive sections of this article that lack any sourcing whatsoever. This is extra problematic as 1) some of these sections include lists of "notable" people without any citations or assertions of notability, and 2) some of these sections are completely OR that acknowledge no agreement on the topic exists. We should not be a source of original research. I've added a number of Unsourced Section tags to the relevant locations on the article, but if they don't get any sources updated soon, I'm just going to remove them entirely. ⇒SWATJester ^{Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat!} 17:16, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
