Why replacing SVG to PNG for essentially tabular data?[edit]

LithiumFlash wrote in the description: "The first discovered minimal 9x9 Sudoku puzzle with 40 givens. Original image uploaded by Dobrichev (13 April 2017). This image is the same except the white border is removed, so that it matches the style of other Sudoku images."

Actually this isn't the same image. Other exceptions include

  • the original file is in public domain, but this is licensed.
  • the original file is in SVG format (scalable & editable in plain text), but this is in PNG format.

As discussed in https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Mathematics_of_Sudoku&section=35 for such data the editable text format is preferable.

I don't see how images format can be kept consistent within an article when working in this way. When creating my version of the image, I took one of the existing files from the same article, and made the changes by keeping the format. Next I used the same format when creating another image and found that LithiumFlash silently replaced the link to his (this) version and now the two images look differently.

A solution of this problem would be if one SVG file is made as image template, and after consensus all (similar) images in the articles in question are converted to the same format. An alternative solution is to move back to tables and use/modify the existing Sudoku templates. In both cases this file isn't the one that should be displayed in the article. It's the very first image at Standardized Format for Sudoku Images, and it's called the "Suggested standard". A raster image is inappropriate for template. You are not in role to define standards, you can propose and/or contribute in the unification of the images. Dobrichev (talk) 18:30, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. That's why it's called it a Suggested standard (not a standard). I believe svg files are vector images (not raster). But if you or any editor has a better svg template we can use that instead. I think images without the empty border look better, especially on a small screen, such as smart phones (my opinion).—LithiumFlash (talk) 02:32, 3 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
