Northern Tributaries[edit]

Hi.

The image seems not to show the Auob, Nossob, Kuruman and Molopo systems that also flow into the Orange.

The caption on Orange River says, the northern tributaries are excluded because some sources claim that the Molopo and its tributaries form an endorheic basin. This is apparently a relatively recent development which occurred sometime in the 20th century, and the river may or may not sometimes overflow and rejoin the Orange River. There's a debate on this at Talk:Orange_River#Catchment_contradiction, though it's six years old (and your comment is nearly two years old, but I'm answering it anyways in case it's important enough for you to check back), and if you decide to bring it up there I'd create a new section.
My own personal position is that nearly all maps I've found of Orange River basin and drainage basins of Africa include the northern tributaries, and thus it would seem that using this map gives undue weight to what would appear to the casual observer such as myself to be a minority viewpoint. I'm not a hydrologist, so I don't really feel qualified to argue the point. But if you want, you can make a new file and upload it to the Commons, then change the page itself.
I will note that the map itself is on the Commons where EN-WP policies don't apply but Commons policy does apply which dictates that for major changes you should create a new file. So should you decide to make a map that includes the northern tributaries, make sure to upload it to a new filename, for example File:Orange watershed extended.png, or better still File:Orange watershed extended.svg. —Quintucket (talk) 03:05, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
