This GIF is irritating![edit]

First, the image is (potentially) fantastically helpful as it contains critical information that makes the VITAL point of the way in which the focus of the "Holy Roman Empire" moved from Italy to Germany. However the animation makes it impossible to study.

Can the image be changed so that the transition between frames can be paused in some way, or the frames selected via embedded icons, or ....

I can't see how this could be done with a GIF, so could the format be changed so that it is possible? If not the image is little more than eye-candy when it could be SO much more.
