Update needed- Armenia[edit]

Hi folks, given the recent (and rapid) developments over the past two/three weeks from Brussels and Yerevan, I believe we should color in Armenia as a "potential candidate". Given the recent statements made by the Armenian prime minister, speaker of the national assembly, and foreign affairs minister all confirming that the country intends to submit the EU candidacy application to the European Commission in autumn of this year, and the recent passing of the EU parliament resolution confirming that Armenia is now legally entitled to apply to the EU, the map should probably reflect these new developments. Not quite sure how to edit images myself...thanks in advance to anyone who could be of assistance! :) Archives908 (talk) 03:52, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

TDL - I see you recently updated the image and are a respected editor within EU related articles. What are your thoughts/would you be able to assist? Cheers, Archives908 (talk) 03:55, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Potential candidate" is a formal term used by the EU to designate states that the Council has recognized have a membership perspective, but are not yet ready for candidate status. This was the conclusion for example in response to Georgia's membership application [1], versus Ukraine and Moldova who were granted candidate status immediately. Recognized potential candidates are listed here: https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/policies/eu-enlargement_en
The EU parliament's resolution is advisory in nature, and so is largely symbolic. Therefore, I think we should wait until the Council officially concludes that Armenia has a membership perspective before changing their colour on this map. TDL (talk) 04:28, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine- we'll wait and see what happens. Archives908 (talk) 12:34, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relatedly, I've noticed that you've been changing the legend of these maps for Kosovo from Applicant / Potential Candidate to just Applicant (ie [2]). I think it's important to highlight their status as both a state who has submitted an application for membership, and who the Council has recognized as a potential candidate. Listing them as just an applicant gives the impression that Kosovo wants to join but the EU hasn't decided if they are eligible. For example, Morocco was an applicant but never a potential candidate and their membership was rejected by the Council. Listing them as Applicant / Potential Candidate shows both that they want to join and have formally applied, and that the EU has accepted that they are eligible for membership and just need to work through the formal process and meet the conditions for candidate status.
