About the head in the center[edit]
It is interesting, but the head in the center can be the Antinous (lover of Hadrian), because there are the other bust of Hadrian found in 1995 by Theodoros Spyropoulos in the Nymphaeum of the villa of Herodes Atticus (c.101-178 CE), at Eva Dolianon (Kynouria), in the neighbohood of the Loukou monastery in Arcadia, Peloponnese. In the centre of THAT bust the usual head of the Gorgon Medusa, has been replaced by a winged portrait of Antinous, thereby intimately linking Hadrian with his decesead lover. A “Gorgoneion”, a Gorgon face, was frequently chiseled on breastplates in the hopes of warding off evil, in that bust it is Antinous who appears as an apotropaic divinity: intended to protect Hadrian, thus echoing the deep personal connection that existed between them.
