While most Chinese to English translations of the Boxer Pamphlet reveals the literal dimension (ie what the words mean), what is lost to the average western reader via translation is the natural cadence or meter that a native Chinese reader will apply when reading this pamphlet. In essence, the call to destroy the foreigners is written in a poetic style resembling that of present day rap music, with enticing rhymes, underlying lyricism, and near musical quality similar to that seen on old style Chinese stage or theater. This provides another avenue for emotional appeal that most westerners will not be able to readily appreciate. Moreover, the choice of characters used in the text is relatively simple (that is, there is nothing esoteric or obscure), probably to ensure that the message can be read by the largest number of people, even those with simple or little education.
