English: Fresco of SS. Theodore and George as horsemen slaying the serpent.
Göreme, Cappadocia, Yılanlı Kilise ("Snake Church"). The date of the fresco is uncertain, it may date to the 9th, 10th or 11th century. This is one of the earliest depictions of St. George in connection with the dragon, and the combination with St Theodore (who had been depicted as dragon-slayer since the 7th century) marks the transfer of the dragon motif from Theodore to George. The first depictions of St George on his own slaying the dragon are also found in Cappadocia and date to the 11th century. |
