The busy heart of William Brownlee's timber empire. The port of Blackball was on a distributary of the Pelorus River, less than two km from Havelock. It boasted a large sawmill, acted as the downstream terminus to the Pelorus railway, and had ample wharf space. In this early 1900s scene, we see the open-ended mill in the centre left, behind the berthed timber ships. The boiler house chimney is just behind. All wharf areas are taken up with cut timber ready for export.
