Description

William Courtenay,3rd Viscount Courtenay (c.1768-1835), later 9th Earl of Devon, painted in 1793 aged 25. Miniature by Richard Cosway (1742-1821). Watercolour on ivory, with unidentified lock of hair sealed behind, 7.2 cm high. Collection of Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, purchased 2010 via dealer Philip Mould, for £24,500 with assistance of grants from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA)/ Victoria & Albert Purchase Grant Fund, the Art Fund (granted £7,000) and the Friends of Exeter Museums and Art Gallery. Provenance: "? collection of Edward Joseph, 1889; ? collection of Frank Woodroffe; John Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York; Christie's, 1935; ? Frank Partridge; Christie's, 1974; private collection; Christie's, 2002; private collection" (per www.artfund.org).
