After he had reachedand finished Nocturne, I would have him turn tothe several earlier novels—The Happy Family,On the Staircase, and The Chaste Wife. 11 The Three Lovers, a full-length novel whichSwinnerton finished in Devonshire in the spring of1922, is a story of human beings in conflict, andit is also a picture of certain phases of modernlife. A young and intelligent girl, alone in theworld, is introduced abruptly to a kind of lifewith which she is unfamiliar.
