Description

The Fremlin Carpet
Cotton warp and weft, wool pile
Mughal India, probably Lahore
c. 1640
IM 1.1936
Purchased with the assistance of the National Art Collections Fund and Mr Frank Fremlin

The coats of arms woven into the borders and field of this carpet belong to William Fremlin, an official of the East India Company. He served the Company in India from 1626-1644, and rose to become president of the Council at Surat in 1637. Apart from the coats of arms dispersed throughout its length, the carpet has a typical Indian hunting design with a Persian-style palmette border. Carpets were used as table-covers in England in the 17th century, rather than on the floor, which would have been covered with rush matting.
