Lit de travers à trois dossiers

Description

Bed (lit a la polonaise)
French (Paris)
About 1780
Carved and gilded beechwood with mirrored dome and silk damask hangings and cover
Stamped G. Jacob with fleur de lys

Georges Jacob was one of the most famous specialists in upholstered furniture in the eighteenth century. He became master in 1765 and in 1784 was appointed a fournisseur to the Court. He retired in 1796, handing on the business to his two sons. The carving and gilding of this bed are of the highest quality. The ciphers carved into the bedposts are as yet unidentified. The silk may be original, however the pattern of the damask of the bed cover differs from that of the upholstered sections, which is unusual.
