(Oligocene, Brule Formation, Pennington County, South Dakota)
HMNS 1017

Mesohippus represents the second stage of evolution of the horse. As a forest dweller, the size of a collie dog Mesohippus had the short, low-crowned teeth of a browsing animal that fed on leaves and soft twigs.
