Summary

Description Launch of the U.S. Navy Viking 4 rocket, on 11 May 1950, from the deck of the USS Norton Sound (AV-11) in the Pacific Ocean near the Equator. After modifications in February and March 1950 at San Francisco Naval Shipyard, Norton Sound launched a five-ton Viking rocket 11 May in "Project Reach". This rocket carried a 227 kg instrumentation package to an altitude 171 km, and provided data on cosmic rays. Viking 4 reached almost the maximum possible height for the payload flown, in a nearly perfect flight. Project "Reach" concluded the first phase of Norton Sound's use as a missile platform.
