Summary

Description

From the title page of an album of photographs taken in Japan between 1914 and 1918.

My thanks to flickerite tokyogaz for identifying this arched bridge as belonging to the famous Kameido Tenjin Shrine in Tokyo.

This was the largest of several bridges on the path to the principal structure of the Kameido Tenjin Shrine; the bridges linked islands in a like in front of the shrine. Built in 1662, the Kameido Tenjin Shrine was destroyed in the Allied firebombings of Tokyo in March, 1945.

For more information about the shrine, including an outstanding collection of woodblock prints of the shrine and this bridge before their destruction, go to "Woodblock Prints of Kameido Tenjin Shrine" at www.ukiyoe-gallery.com/kameido-woodblocks.htm

Once there, you can follow a link to photographs of the rebuilt shrine, which now exists as an oasis "within the generally dull and uninspired architecture typical of Japan's post-War reconstruction." ("A Visit to Tokyo's Kameido Tenjin Shrine" www.ukiyoe-gallery.com/kameido.htm )

Note: I have no connection to, or relationship with, the gallery that created the Web pages cited above.

Image dimensions before cropping: 101mm x 147mm.

I own the originals of these unpublished family photos. ... As a salesman for Atkins Saw Company, Elstner Hilton traveled to the Far East to sell commercial sawmills in the early years of the 20th century. ... Elstner Hilton was my father-in-law Frank Hilton's* brother, which makes him my spouse's uncle. ...
    * Elstner Hilton's brother Frank Hilton compiled a scrapbook of photographs, clippings and other ephemera at Stanford University between 1907 and 1911. ...
ps: I now have reason to believe that the photos of Japan may be stock photos that Uncle Elstner purchased and pasted into his album. There may be some exceptions: the images of his sister, Miriam, and photos of logging operations in the Phillippines.
