English: Annotated diagram depicting apoplastic and symplastic phloem loading pathways.

The top diagram shows apoplastic sucrose phloem loading, using facilitated passive transport from sugar-producing cells to apoplast, active transport (primary and secondary) from apoplast to companion cell symplast, and simple diffusion from symplast to phloem.

The bottom diagram shows symplastic sucrose phloem loading, using simple diffusion from sugar-producing cells to phloem.
