Summary

Description
English: Off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. (Aug. 5, 2002) -- The revolving gun turret from the civil war era “Ironclad” ship USS Monitor is lifted from the ocean floor, and placed onto the derrick barge “Wotan”. U.S. Navy divers assigned to Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2 (MDSU-2) provided expert deep-sea salvage crews to assist the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to recover the ship’s gun turret, 11-inch Dahlgren cannons, and other artifacts from the historic vessel. Since its designation as our nation's first marine sanctuary in 1975, the Monitor has been the subject of intense investigation. The turret was the first revolving gun of its kind and will eventually be on public display in the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Va. The famed warship sank 240 feet to the ocean floor during a heavy storm off Cape Hatteras on Dec. 31, 1862. Four officers and 12 men were lost.
