Summary

Description
English: The United States National Christmas Tree in Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., in the United States. The photo was taken some time between December 24, 1936, to January 1, 1939.

In 1934, the U.S. National Christmas Tree (then called the "National Community Christmas Tree") was relocated from Sherman Plaza (south of the U.S. Treasury Building) to Lafayette Square north of the White House. The National Park Service purchased two 23-foot (7.0 m) high Fraser firs from North Carolina and planted them 18 to 23 feet (5.5 to 7.0 m) east and west of the Andrew Jackson statue. The west tree was used for the 1934, 1936, and 1938 ceremonies, and the east tree in 1935 and 1937. A temporary low octagonal fence was constructed around the 1936 tree.

In the 1930s, the tree was first lit on Christmas Eve (December 24), and remained lit through New Year's Day (it was turne off around dawn on January 2).

In 1939, the National Community Christmas Tree was moved back to the Ellipse.
