Description

The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-60) arives at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Pennsylvania (USA), circa 1 October 1980. On 28 September 1980, only one month after her return from deployment, Saratoga departed Naval Station Mayport, Florida (USA), and headed north to Philadelphia where she underwent the most extensive industrial overhaul ever performed on any U.S. Navy ship. Saratoga was the first ship to go through the Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) overhaul that would last 28 months. She conducted sea trials on 16 October 1982 and several problems were soon found, including improper welding of boiler tubes, and she was inoperative for several months. Saratoga left Philadelphia 2 February 1983 and deployed again in April 1984.
