Summary

Description
English: Insignia of the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CVA-34). This insignia was adopted in 1961. Its design reflected the source of the USS ORISKANY name and her missions. The globe, used for a background, illustrated world-wide sea power. The aircraft carrier was a symbol of naval power, and the eagle represented the ever-present vigil that the U.S. Navy maintained. The remaining parts of the insignia represented the Battle of Oriskany, New York, in 1777. Hawk are the type of weapons used in the fighting of that era. The nettles and blue background (water) come from the Mohawk Native American name of Oriskany: "orisk" (nettles) and "any" (water).
