Description
English: The U.S. Navy fleet ocean tug USS Abnaki (ATF-96) and the Soviet SIGINT trawler Gidrofon underway in the South China Sea on 18 December 1967.

Added description by crewmember Radarman 2nd Class Steven Henry: "This picture was taken from the USS Ranger (CVA-61) on 18 December 1967 around 1700 shortly after a collision between the AGI Gidrofon and the USS Abnaki (ATF-96). The Ranger passed us doing 25 knots at a distance of less than 500 yards (450 m). Our choice was hit the carrier or the trawler. Our captain chose to hit the trawler. I have a picture of the Soviet trawler with a dent in their starbard side near the rear of the ship.

According to another unnamed crewmember, Gidrofon was in the Gulf of Tonkin, trying to jam U.S. radio communications. Abnaki carried a so-called "Sugar Shack" to combat this threat.
