Summary

Description
English: The Haupt bridge across Potomac Creek on the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad constructed during the Civil War. On May 28, 1862, President Lincoln told members of the War Committee that he had "seen the most remarkable structure that human eyes ever rested upon. That man Haupt [General Herman Haupt, Commander of the United States Military Railroad] has built a bridge four hundred feet long and one hundred feet high, across Potomac Creek, on which loaded trains are passing every hour, and upon my word, gentlemen, there is nothing in it but cornstalks and beanpoles." In May 1862, using unskilled infantry, Haupt rebuilt this destroyed by Confederates bridge in only nine rainy days, however, with considerably more than cornstalks and beanpoles.
