TUSH KYIZ (Central Asia, Nomadic)
On her wedding day Kazakh or Kyrgiz brides would sit in a chimildik or curtained off area in front of a Tush Kyiz, a heavily embroidered textile with bright warm colors. Embroidered for her by relatives, she would bring it as a part of her dowry to her husband’s yurt. Three sides of the textile are framed with a wide colorful band of red or orange quilted fabric. The fourth side rarely had a border as its raw edge would hang below the seating bench. The three sides were enough to frame the seated bride. After the wedding, the textile was used as a backdrop for the seating area of honored guests. Other such embroideries might be added to the household collection over the years. We have a magnificent display of Tush Kyiz against the back wall. Similar motifs, colors and stitches are found on long embroidered friezes that would be used to decorate the front edge of beds or divans.
