Summary

Description
English: This image shows the Tshirege Member of the Bandelier Tuff underlying Kwage Mesa, near Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA. The Tshirege Member was emplaced by the Valles eruption 1.25 million years ago, which also created the Valles caldera. The Tshirege Member is described as a compound cooling unit, with distinct flows discernible in the beds. The classification of these units in this area is shown here, with the alphabetical bed labels from the Rogers (1995) scheme and the Qbt numbers from the Broxton and Reneau (1995) scheme, which closely correspond in this area. Roger's E and F units are found closer to the caldera and correspond less closely to Broxton and Reneau's Qbt 3T and Qbt 4 units.
