Notes

White House copy of the 1788 painting Notes from Kloss, William, et al. Art in the White House: A Nation's Pride. Washington, D.C.: The White House Historical Association, 2008:

"The painting is the first and finest of three replicas made by Trumbull from his life portrait of Thomas Jefferson, which he had painted directly into the small Declaration of Independence (Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven).

"[This miniature painting was in the possession of Maria Cosway.] On her death in 1838 many of her possessions became the property of [a school she had founded in Italy in 1812]. It was lent to the National Gallery of Art for its bicentennial exhibition, 'The Eye of Thomas Jefferson,' and at the close of the exhibition, it was . . . presented to the White House as a gift to the American people from the government of Italy."
