herself when the playing of the royal band outside the palaceannounced the approach of distinguished guests. And my, how they did stare when the High Chamberlainthrew open the doors and the visitors entered the Throne-Room! First walked a gingerbread man, neatly formed andbaked to a lovely brown tint. He wore a silk hat and carrieda candy cane prettily striped with red and yellow. His shirt-front and cuffs were white frosting, and the buttons on hiscoat were licorice drops. KING DOUGH, THE HEAD BOOLEYWAG, AND PARA BRUIN The Road to Oz Ozmas High Chamberlain now hurried forward to an-nounce the names of the new arrivals, calling out in a loudvoice: His Gracious and Most Edible Majesty, King Doughthe First, Ruler of the Two Kingdoms of Hiland and Lo-land. Also the Head Booleywag of his Majesty, known asChick the Cherub, and their faithful friend Para Bruin, therubber bear. These great personages bowed low as their names werecalled, and Dorothy hastened to introduce them to the assem-bled company. They were the first foreign arrivals, and thefriends of Princess Ozma were polite to them and tried tomake them feel that they were welcome. Chick the Cherub shook hands with every one, includingBillina, and was so joyous and frank and full of good spiritsthat John Doughs Head Booleywag at once became a primefavorite. Is it a boy or a girl? whispered Dorothy. Dont know, said Button-Bright. Goodness me! what a queer lot of people you are, ex-claimed the rubber bear
