The gunboats Ti/lcr atid Lexingtonin the river joined with Welisters batteries upon the ridge and a frightful fire was poured into the ranks of the advancing Con-federates. In the face of this, although finding himself unsupported save by Gages battery, Withers led on his men. The divisionthat he had expected to reenforce him had been withdrawn by the order of General Beam-egard. To his men working their way upthe slope came the order to retire. General Chalmers, of Withers Division, did not get the word. Down in the ravine his men aloneof the whole Confederate army were continuing the battle.
