The delays Sherman had met with in his advance on Atlanta resulting in constant and indecisivefighting without entrapping Johnston, had brought about a reaction at the North. A large party wished toend the war. Election Day was approaching. Lincoln was a presidential candidate for the second time.He had many enemies. But the news of Shermans capture of Atlanta helped to restore confidence, andto insure thecontinuation of the administration pledged to a vigorous prosecution of the war. I

The use of the instrument had not then become pastime;it was a pioneer science, requiring absohite knowledge, training, and experience. Only experts like the menthat Brady trained could do such work as this. There were no lightning shutters, no automatic or universalfocus. In positions of danger and at times when speed and accuracy were required, there was the delicacyof the old-fashioned wet plate to consider, with all its drawbacks. No wonder people were surprised thatpictures such as this exist; they had grown used to the old woodcut and the often mutilated attempts ofpen and pencil to portraj such scenes of action.
