hington Avenue was built and furnished. This additioncost, including the land, $25,000. About $5,000 was spent inadditional tools, furniture and shop appliances. By this extension the capacity of the school was nearlydoubled, and its facilities were well balanced. The result is anexceedingly satisfactory arrangement for a school which mustprovide all the features of the daily program. The moneyfor the large addition was furnished in equal parts by Messrs.Ralph Sellew and G. Conzelman. A view of the building isshown in the frontispiece, and the details of the floor plans aregiven later in the book. The third year of the school opened September 11, 1882, andclosed June 14, 1883, with the graduation of its first class.Twenty-nine young men received diplomas and medals. Theenrollment for the year was 176. The fourth year of the school opened September 10, 1883. 10 THE GROWTH OF THE MANUAL ELEMENT. (Ohap. I The enrollment for the year was 201. Twenty-nine studentsreceived diplomas in June.

The fifth year began September 8,1884. The enrollment was218. Thirty-nine students graduated at the end of the year. During the year 1884, the school lost two of its best andearliest friends in the death of two of its managers, RalphSellew and Gottlieb Conzelman. Chap. I.) OTHER MANUAL TRAINING SCHOOLS. 11 At the same time, through their liberality and the co-oper-ation of Mr. Samuel Cupples, a member of the Managing Boardfrom the first, an endowment of $115,000 was secured to theschool.^ The sixth year opened September 14, 1885. The enrollmentfor the year was 234. The number of students graduating wasforty-jive. It is interesting to note that these forty-five, and one whoremained to the end but failed to win a diploma, representjust 100 boys who during the three years had belonged to theclass.
