(263) 264 TRANSPORTATION. on the western bank of the main lagoon, nearly in the centre of thegrounds, half overlapping the Building for Mines and Mining, andlookino- across the water to the Buildino- for Manufactures. It isdirectly south of the Horticultural Building. In general the archi°tectural features of the building are very simple, but its detailsand accessories are rich. At the centre it is surmounted by a cupola 165 feet high, whichaffords an extensive view ofgrounds, Lake and surround-ing country. This point ofobservation is reached byeight elevators, which run forpublic use, and properly forma part of the transportationexhibit. This is the only de-partment building thus pro-vided. The main entranceto the building consists ofan immense arch decoratedwith carvings, bas-reliefsand mural paintings. Itis treated entirely in gold,silver and bronze leaf, and isknown as the golden door.On one side of the arch
