[ The cover of the book by Feliks Konarski, entitled Czerwone Maki na Monte Cassino. Wiersze i piosenki 1939-1945 (The Red Poppies on Monte Cassino. Poems and Songs 1939-1945). The book cover is significant in its design showing the image of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa, a holy icon of the Virgin Mary, that is both Poland's holiest relic and one of the country's national symbols, looking over the remaining ruins of the famous Abbey of Monte Cassino after the battle. The significance of the book's title is that "Czerwone Maki" is one of the most famous songs to emerge from the World War II. It is a combative, emotional song that makes listeners of Polish background stand at attention when it is played. During the World War II battle, the mountain terrain of Monte Cassino was covered with red poppy flowers at the peak of their bloom. Afterwards, the poppy flowers became a deeper red in color because they were nourished by the blood of Polish soldiers that died during the famous battle. (sources: Bogusia J.
