Summary

Description

Katrina Palmer. The Coffin Jump. 2018.

Inspired by the role of women in the First World War, with specific references to the all-female First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY). It is a co-commission as part of 14-18 NOW, the UK's arts programme for the First World War centenary. The artwork features a horse jump with texts written in response to the diaries of the nurses, including that of Muriel Thompson. Originally intended to be on horseback, the FANY gave demonstrations, such as rescues, at the 1911 Festival of Empire. 'The Enchantress' sung by Clara Butt, was performed at the same festival and is broadcast through the tannoys near to The Coffin Jump prior to a horse and rider galloping through the Country Park to take the jump, then riding on. This action is sporadic and is not advertised in advance.

Palmer's work combines sculpture, soundtrack and performance and symbolises the new freedoms afforded to women in the war - a leap into the twentieth century.
