Description
English: The painting shows the five battleships of the U.S. Navy's Battleship Division Nine, serving as the 6th Battle Squadron of the British Grand Fleet sometime in 1918. This U.S. battleship squadron had been assigned to the Grand Fleet in late 1917, after the U.S. had entered World War I. It initially consisted of four battleships: New York (BB-34), Wyoming (BB-32), Florida (BB-30), and Delaware (BB-28). On 11 February 1918, Texas (BB-35) joined the squadron, making five. Delaware was replaced by Arkansas (BB-33) on 29 July 1918. Since the painting shows five U.S. battleships, it must depict the squadron sometime in 1918; the individual ships cannot be identified, though New York may be in the lead. The Forth Bridge is in the background, with a British Lion-class battlecruiser visible off to the right.
