Although source appears to indicate the photo was taken on Guadalcanal, the book:

Alexander, Joseph H., Edson's Raiders, Naval Institute Press, 2001, p. 279, states that the photo was taken at Enogai on New Georgia after the battle there in July, 1943.

Source states that the photo was taken by a US Government employee on duty which makes it a public domain document. Taken on 11 July 1943
