Summary

Description
English: Chimney piece removed from Tabley Old Hall, Cheshire, now in the Old Hall Room at Tabley House. Built to memorialise the 1611 marriage of Peter Leycester (1588–1647) of Tabley to Elizabeth Mainwaring, a daughter of Sir Randle Mainwaring of Over Peover, Cheshire. The arms show Leycester (Azure, a fess gules between three fleurs-de-lys or) of four quarters, impaling Mainwaring (Barry of twelve argent and gules) of four quarters. The arms of Leycester are a known contravention of the heraldic "rule of tinctures".( Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1902, 9th and 10th editions, "Heraldry"[1])[2]
