Summary

Description
English: The primary rainbow, the higher order rainbows with alternatively reversed order of colors and Alexander's dark band are well understood with refraction, reflection and caustics. The explanation of the supernumerary rainbows lies beyond geometric optics. Within physical optics, the wave nature of light causes areas of constructive and destructive interference.
