Illustration of deceased historical figure in article regarding a topic for which his writings are considered one of the most important sources of information. The way he presented himself was a new model for many other interpreters of that musical genre. Figure was a performer-author whose work became "authoritative" in part because of his convincing image, that of an old time sailor with "authoritative" experience. This issue is discussed in the article: "The book's "authoritative" position is bolstered by the personal image of its author. In contrast to many of the academic folklorists who had collected shanties before him, Hugill possessed the look and pedigree of an old-time sailor, and he was able to actually perform the songs from his collection at sea music festivals." The image therefore serves as a dramatic demonstration of an important facet of the book's success, as referred to in article, which could not be fully comprehended without the use of an image. |
