This bearded man with scrolls could symbolise an attribute such as wisdom, however it is very likely to be also a portrait of the architect himself: (1) he sports a Pre-Raphaelite beard, as did Barber's colleagues in the Artists Rifles in the early 1860s; (2) he carries an armful of scrolls which look just like architects' plans; (3) his profile looks like the well-known portrait of Barber by David Wilkie Wynfield.

This mansion was a rebuild of a 17th century house, and designed in 1871 by William Swinden Barber for Tom Holdsworth. It is owned by Kirklees Council and it houses Calderdale Register Office.
